The Gold Coin/The Silver Coin
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (July, 2001)
Author: Andrea Kane
Average review score:

Good book but some phrasing was annoying
I really did love this book even though it is quite lengthy. The steamy love passages were really terrific. The author does overuse several phrases, "an impish grin" and a "terse nod." I swear it nearly drove me NUTS!!! Does anyone agree with me?
This book was really good, though. The story is really compelling, a real "girl's book."

Brilliant!
This book was absolutely incredible!! Many times Romance Novels are tacky and just contain a lot of unnecessary sex, but Andrea Kane's novels had a great plot, and this set was no different, in fact, they were much better! Breanna and Anastasia's journey through their life and problems is very well written and though you tend to like Anastasia more in the beginning (that's how it was for me) by the time you're done with the Silver Coin, you truly like both girls equally. Andrea Kane brought life and personality to both characters. This set had a strong storyline of the strength of women--especially Breanna, who had the quiet but iron fist type of will and determination. Each woman found their perfect match in Damen and Royce and the couples were perfectly suited for each other. Altogether, you could not put the book down! Kane maintains her reputation as a magnificent romance writer.

The best historical romance I have read.
I usually shy away from historical romances because I can't imagine the place and time and the language and way of speaking is usually outdated.
That all changed when my aunt bought me this double book by Andrea Kane.
The characters are interesting and deep. The touch of mystery matched with spell-binding romance kept me turning the pages all night long. I loved this book so much that I read the entire thing in one sitting. I stayed up until four am reading it on a school night.
It's a wonderful novel and I recommend it to anyone.

Great Balls of Fire: The Uncensored Story of Jerry Lee Lewis
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (September, 1982)
Authors: Myra Lewis and Murray Silver
Average review score:

WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON...
Entertaining biography of rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis. It details his rise from the poverty of rural Louisiana to become a rock and roll legend. Told by his wife of thirteen years, Myra Lewis, the book recounts an insider's view of those early days of rock and roll and of the rise of Jerry Lee Lewis in the annals of rock and roll.

Jerry grew up with his first cousin, Jimmy Lee Swaggart, who in his own right achieved a measure of notoriety as a prominent preacher and televangelist. Lewis, however, a music lover from early childhood, wanted nothing more than to be a piano playing musician. A backwoods good ole boy, he shocked the country with his antics, topping it all off with his marriage to his thirteen year old cousin, Myra, an act which brought him unwelcome notoriety.

Known for his high energy performances, Jerry Lee Lewis lived hard, played hard, and worked hard at his music. His was a life of which legends are made. This book is an enjoyable, no holds barred narrative of that life.

THE BEST WRITTEN ABOUT JERRY LEE!!
This is the best book ever written about "The Killer." It is
well researched, factual, and brilliantly composed! It is a classic.

The best book written on Jerry Lee Lewis
Here's a writer who did his research for years...its factual, interesting and important!

The Hebrew Alphabet: A Mystical Journey
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (September, 1998)
Authors: Edward Hoffman and Karen Silver
Average review score:

A ray of light
I am not jewish, and I really enjoyed reading this book. I think it helps you understand the passages in the Bible better because you'll understand the jewish context. I wish this book went into even more detail about each letter, but this is a great sampling if you are curious about the powerful meaning of the hewbrew letters. The author, Edward Hoffman, writes beautifully and keeps your focus.

Hoffman Rings the Bell for Hebrew Students!
After perusing several books on Kabbalah mysticism, not letting them 'sink-in', I went from Rabbi Kushner's Book of Letters and his Book of Words to this little jewel of Hoffman's mysical use of the 22 Hebrew letters. In his ten-age Part I he moves through developing Hebrew alphabet from the North Semitic tribes more than 3500 years ago, to Ezra the Scribe of the 5th Century, to the Midrash, to the Talmudic commentary on Exodus, to the 13th Century, Zohar (Book of Splendor)!

When Hoffman arrives at the Zohar he reflects on the statement that, "God looked into [the letters] of the Torah and created the universe." From one of the early Jewish mystics, Abraham ben Samuel Abulafia he quotes the Hebrew letters as a means to arouse tremendous intuitive capabilities: "Look at these holy letters with truth and belief...[it] will awaken the heart to thoughts of godly and prophetic images." In Abulafia's approach he suggests that one "begin to combine letters, a few or many, reversing and rolling them around rapidly, until [one's] heart feels warm."

In teaching dysfunctional children in their teens, I am making good use of Hebrew letters such as: Yud, Reish and Shin...Yud for the words 'yom' or day; names as Yoel [Joel] Yoneh [Jonah] and impulse for good and evil: yetzer hatov and yetzer hara.

Also, Reish as Holy Spirit [Ruach Ha-Kadosh]; healing [rafooah] and healer [rofeh]; Shin for words as Shabbat, Shalom and simcha [joy]and shanah [year]. These last ones fit beautifully with the name of one of the girls - Kashanah! Not only is Mr Hoffman's little Jewel great for metaphorical teaching it is an avenue to reach those inquiring, inquisitive, uniquely thoughtful minds.
For them to see the beautiful pictures of Karen Silver is a Plus.
I strongly recommend this to teachers of Special Education!
Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

Mystical exploration of the many meanings of Hebrew letters
This richly printed and illustrated little book is a meditation on ideas, mystical experiences and ancient rabbinical stories sparked by each letter of the Hebrew alphabet, a transliteration of the Aleph Bet in the original language. I recommend it to those interested in Jewish studies, in meditation, and in mysticism. It is short but it contains much wisdom. It is also a beautifully designed little book and a fitting travel companion.

Maeve Binchy: Three Complete Books/the Lilac Bus/Firefly Summer/Silver Wedding
Published in Hardcover by Wings Press (October, 1995)
Author: Maeve Binchy
Average review score:

A great collection of stories
I liked Maeve Binchy before, but I am even more of a fan after buying this set. Unfortunately because I am such a busy person this book took me just over a year to finish! But I loved every page and would definitely give it a re-read.
The three novels in this book are all distinctly different and, in my view, each deserve their own little mini-review:
THE LILAC BUS - Since I read this a year ago, the finer details are lost on me. But I did like how this novel focuses on so many characters and yet you get to feel like you know each one. And I loved how each character viewed each scene differently. You read one chapter and you see one person's point of view, and then you read the next and you get completely different thoughts on the situation. Only Ms. Binchy could keep tabs on so many characters so skillfully. And all I can say about DUBLIN FOUR is that I had to flip through it a little to remember what it was even about, so obviously it's not as stellar as its counterpart. 4 stars total.
FIREFLY SUMMER - A great book all around. It's easily the longest story of the three (it's almost 500 pages, compared to 200 for The Lilac Bus and 150 for Silver Wedding) but once you get going, you don't even notice the book's length. The characters are so genuine, and you are upset to see them go at the end. The main plot is very thick, and yet you enjoy reading all the little sub-plots that go along with it. I actually cried reading some parts of this book! The book ends as you hope it will but not in the manner that you expect! So will Patrick's hotel succeed? You'll just have to read it and find out! 5 stars.
SILVER WEDDING - is the freshest in my mind because I just finished it. It is similar to The Lilac Bus in that it devotes each chapter to a character. But while The Lilac Bus follows the characters through the same moments of time, each chapter in Silver Wedding is a distinct moment. For instance, when you read about Anna (chapter 1) it is months before the anniversary, but when you read about Deirdre (chapter 8), it's a few weeks before. The more you read, the more you find out about the wedding itself and the people involved. However, I found that although there were plenty of sub-plots to keep the story going, the main plot was not very well developed or interesting (ok, so they're having a party, and Deirdre's the only one who's truly excited... you almost get that from page one, why keep going?). And the characters themselves aren't as "3-dimensional" as they are in Ms. Binchy's other stories. I really expected more, but it still wasn't a waste of time. 3 stars.

An excellent series of Binchy all in one book.
I have been a fan of Binchy after having been introduced to her books 2 years ago by my Grandaughter. "Lilac Bus" at first seemed disjointed and confusing but as I got into the book it became more and more interesting. I liked the fact that it was a group of short stories that you could read put down and then pick up again later without having to look back to refresh your memory. When you realize that this is a story of a group who each week-end return to their hometown and the involvement in their lives and how it relates to the others the story grabs
your interest and holds it to the end. "Firefly Summer" is an exceptional story and very suspensful. I had trouble putting the book down and found myself reading into the wee hours of the morning. The story intrigues to the point you want it to end so you can find out what happens and at the same time you feel you do not want it to end but want it to go on forever. I felt it compared to her "Tara Road." After finishing the story I was still living in the setting for the next 24 hours. "Silver Wedding" the third story in this group did not engage my interest as much until I was well into but in the end it also was well worth the read. I highly recommend this book whether you have ever read Binchy before or not read these. I am now purchasing this series in audio book form for my Grandaughter who is a student in Ireland and has been very ill and must rest and recover her strength. I feel these stories will provide her with entertainment and relaxation during this time. I have yet to read a Binchy book I did not like. I have now read 5 of her books.

Absolutely three of the finest books I've ever read.
Maeve brings her characters to life in every single one of her stories - so much so that when the story has ended, you are almost angry that there isn't more to read. I felt like I knew the people she was writing about - and that the friendships needed to keep developing, but the last page was turned, and it was over. Maeve - I will read every single book you have written, and I'm sure I will love them all. (And this from a mostly non-fiction reader). Bravo.

Nutcracker on Ice (Silver Blades)

A great story!
This was a great plot. There wasn't much skating in it, though. Amber gets to play the role that Jill so badly wants, and to top it all off Amber is Silver Blades's newest member and star skater! Readers will laugh at the funny moments and share Jill's annoyance and anger at getting a small role. It's a good read for anyone.

A must read!
I loved it! Amber is a great character. Jill has to deal with a role she doesn't want and the newest member of Silver Blades who is stealing the spotlight from Jill. A must-read for anyone!

One of the best!!
I love this book. Jills fans (such as myself) should not miss it. Good for people who like the nutcracker as well. This is a very well written story and it keeps you going till the end. I wasnt bored. Not even for a minute. Also there are some funny parts especially with Jills family. I recommend you read this book. And Im talking about the first part of it as well as this. Only I like this a little better than the first part. It was nice to see Kathy react as she did. A total thumbs up!!!!!.

Palace of the Silver Princess
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (December, 1981)
Author: Jean Wells
Average review score:

Classic example of the "plot-twisting" dungeon crawl
Here's a well-loved classic adventure by Tom Moldvay and Jean Wells. A mysterious dragon-riding knight has apparently abducted Princess Argenta, and the entire kingdom is falling prey to evil. A basic plot - save the princess, slay the dragon, right? Until the adventurers learn that nothing is as it seems, evil is not where it was imagined to be, and something far more sinister is afoot... an extremely challenging and well-plotted adventure for levels 1-3, easily converted to AD&D. Recommended!

A Classic module for D&D
Though it is not my most favorite module, it is still a very good one. Moreover, it is one of the most famous, popular D&D module in 1980s. I need not say more, just get it. You will not be disappointed with this classic module.

Adventure in a frozen castle setting
Oh boy did it take me a long time to track this one down to buy. One of the nicest of the Basic AD&D series from the early eighties. The party happens upon a castle that is frozen in time and must do battle with the denizens inside. Yea, there's a princess somewhere in there too. A great collectible with some excellent illustrations. Where did those good ol' days go?

King James Version Ultrthin Reference Bible: Dusty Rose Bonded Leather Silver Edging/Ultrathin
Published in Hardcover by Holman Bible Pub (December, 1989)
Author: Broadman & Holman Publishers
Average review score:

Compact and very readable!
I found this bible to be very compact and it even has a reference. I bought it for its smallness and the good crisp typeface. A good pick when you gotta pack light!

Excellent bible translation in a handy portable format
One of the most accurate translations of the bible, the New King James Version is also one of the most beautiful translations, in language and style. This particular printing however, leaves some to be desired; it can be improved with an easier to read font, and by using a paragraph format instead of the verse format it uses now. Otherwise this is an excellent, very portable printing of the outstanding New King James Version of the Holy Bible.

Very comfortable bible...
This bible is a perfect size, not to big or small and the print is not large not too small, and there is something about the way in which it is bound that when it sits open it fits comfortably in your hand and the pages stay open until you change them, you know how some books are bound so when you open them you have to keep your hand on the page to keep it open, this is bound so that it stays where you open it, that is very important to prevent frustration. Enjoy

Ready-To-Use World Geography Activities for Grades 5-12
Published in Spiral-bound by Center for Applied Research in Education (December, 1994)
Authors: James F. Silver and Eileen Gerne Ciavarella
Average review score:

Excellent but needs updating.
I would highly recommend this book except that it is outdated. Found a few errors, but I loved it otherwise. Hope the author has an updated version. The activities make learning fun.

Great effort and fantastic help for Social Studies
The fact that teachers and students can copy the pages to do puzzles or color the maps is great since students get a hands on involvement with the text.

I want to suggest another book as a companion to this atlas. My classes have enjoyed a cute little book titled: Humpty Dumpty Sat on the Globe by Fereydoun Kian.

Mr. Kian's book can go hand in hand with Dr. Silver's puzzles. Once children associate the map of the country they see in this Ready to Use World Geography and the images that Mr. Kian has conjured up in Humpty Dumpty Sat on the Globe, they will remember all the funs of puzzles and stories combined.

I have to also thank Ms. Ciavarella's lively and colorful illustrations.

Wonderful!
As a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Social Studies teacher, I found this book to be extremely useful in my classroom. Dr. Silver is a dedicated educator and his books are always wonderful for classroom use! The reproducible pages make teaching easy and the lessons can be used with any existing curriculum.

Silver Christmas Ornaments: A Collector's Guide
Published in Hardcover by Krause Publications (February, 1998)
Author: Clara Johnson Scroggins
Average review score:

Somewhat mediocre
Original 1980 book is much more comprehensive in guidelines for a collector to include current priceguides. Her newest 1997 update has more enhanced ornament selection and discussion but poorly presented when it comes to valuating current market prices for these ornaments....what she does do is spend lots of time and print on the "issue price" for the older ornaments which I do not believe has merit from a collectors point of view......disappointing after waiting some 20+ years for an update....and still have to research further for information that was in her first edition of the book and missing in the much later and current 1997 update....if one is new to collecting silver ornaments it is easy to be impressed with all the newest silver and silverplate ornaments of the last 30 years to include photos for easy identification.

INFORMATIVE, PRECISE AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED
AS A NOVICE COLLECTOR, I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE MOST NFORMATIVE BUT NOT OVERWHELMING IN IT'S DESCRIPTIONS AND DETAILS OF SILVER CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS COLLECTING.

INFORMATIVE, DETAILED, BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED
AS A NEW COLLECTOR OF STERLING CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS, I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE MOST INFORMATIVE AND DETAIL ORIENTED. THE PICTURES OF THE ORNAMENTS ALONG WITH EACH DESCRIPTION WAS MOST HELPFUL TO THE COLLECTOR. LOOKING FORWARD TO OBTAINING PAST GUIDES BY CLARA JOHNSON SCROGGINS.
